Director of Operations and Finance

Health Equity Solutions is Connecticut’s leader in advocacy for transformative, practical changes that enable greater health equity for all.  Health Equity Solutions (HES) catalyzes systemic public policy changes that advance and sustain health equity in Connecticut through a non-partisan, collaborative, results-oriented approach.

HES seeks a strong professional with non-profit operations and finance skills to serve as its Director of Operations and Finance.  The Director of Operations and Finance will oversee HES’ internal operations, and lead and apply a strategic view to HES’ finance and accounting. The position includes both managerial and hand-on responsibilities.

Since HES began its work in 2014, it has built a position of respect and influence in health policy conversations in Connecticut.  It currently has a staff of four (the Director of Operations and Finance is a new position in addition to these).


Key Responsibilities of the Director of Operations and Finance:

The overall job responsibility is to lead strategic asset management of the organization, including financial processes, staff, interns and volunteers, and IT systems; while supporting the Executive Director in her leadership of the organization.    

“Strategic” is a key word for this work.  The Director of Operations and Finance will not only develop and oversee strong systems for recording what has happened (record-keeping, tax filings, audit, etc.) and what is happening (compliance, time records, cash management, receipts and payables, hiring and other personnel matters) but also have a strategic view for where HES is going (budgeting, organizational projections, cash projections, planning).

Specific responsibilities within this role include: 

  • Financial management, including budget (annual and long-term projections), cash flow, cash management and accounts payable, payroll, audit prep/coordination w accountant, and monitoring checks and balances.
  • Compliance, including lobbying registration and annual filings, annual charitable filing, and (through accountant) tax filings.
  • Support for (and sometimes leadership of) fund development efforts, grant compliance monitoring, and grant reporting.
  • Organizational systems and documentation (for example, accounting manual; and onboarding processes).Physical office management (relations with landlord, oversight of maintenance and furnishing of office space, office keys/codes).
  • HR functions (Hiring / discipline / termination processes; benefits enrollment and management; track work days and leave days; support staff training).
  • Manage office IT resources, consultant, and planning.
  • Support Executive Director in her work with Board of Directors (scheduling meetings, development and distribution of meeting agendas, support Board Treasurer’s exercise of Board financial oversight).
  • Oversight of public communications platforms including website and social media.

  • Strong non-profit management skills
  • Strong team-building and collaboration skills
  • Excellent task management and project management; ability to work towards multiple deadlines
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Significant knowledge and experience regarding non-profit financial management
  • Fund development experience
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, accounting software, word, e-mail, mastering new software as needed).

Location and travel

  • The position is located in HES’ Hartford office
  • Occasional in-state or out-of-state travel may be required.
